Getting the Body You Want is Possible

Fat! To some people, it’s a dirty word. When they look at themselves in the mirror, all they can see is the annoying, mushy fat. When they put on clothes, that annoying, mushy fat seems to be visible through the clothes, making what they are wearing hang in an undesired manner. When they go to the beach or pool, they may want to avoid having others see that annoying, mushy fat, so they might try to stay covered up; reducing their desire to be at the beach/pool, or to stay very long.

But, fat is also an amazing thing. It can provide the subtleness and smoothness to our skin. It can provide fullness of volume in areas of our body where we want that fullness. A body without fat can look hard, flat, gaunt. Or, it can look sexy. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

CoolSculpting® technology uses controlled cooling to target and kill specific fat cells that are brought into the device applicator. Essentially, the technician will determine which size of device applicator is needed in order to suck in that annoying, mushy fat beneath the skin.

How much can be sucked in depends on how much you have. The CoolSculping® machine then uses a controlled process to cool down the tissue pulled into the applicator, in order to “freeze” and kill some of the fat cells. But don’t worry, the process doesn’t damage the skin. The reason for this is that fat freezes at a different temperature than the skin does. In fact, fat freezes at a temperature just above zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). The way to think about this is using the analogy of butter. When it’s in the fridge, it is very hard. When left out on the counter, it’s much softer. If you put it in your hand, it becomes mushy. Fat in our body is somewhat similar. When cooled to a few degrees above zero Celsius, it becomes hard, and as a result, some of those fat cells die.

Will they come back? Generally, no. Our body has a limited number of fat cells and only in rare situations will it produce more/new fat cells. You might think this is a lie, because most of us are sure the amount of fat we have is increasing. But what is actually happening is that the fat cells we have are increasing (or decreasing) in volume depending on how much energy they need to store.

By killing those fat cells with CoolSculpting®, we aren’t actually removing a significant amount of fat, but we are changing how that specific fat deposit looks beneath the skin.
